Barry J. Gonder, General Partner, Grove Street Advisors (GSA)
2001 and has more than 22 years of experience in the private equity industry. GSA is an investment advisory firm specializing in private equity investments with over $5 billion under management. GSA invests on behalf of institutional investors and family offices in the full range of private equity funds, from early stage, technology-oriented venture capital to buyouts and special situations. At GSA, Mr. Gonder is responsible for building and managing client portfolios and participating in the development and management of the firm.
Prior to joining GSA, Mr. Gonder was the Senior Investment Officer for the Alternative Investment Management Program at CalPERS where he was responsible for managing the Alternative Investment and Private Equity portfolios. Mr. Gonder designed the overall investment strategy, built the professional staff of seven, and implemented back-off processes. During his tenure Mr. Gonder and his staff grew CalPERS commitments to private equity funds and direct investments by approximately $19 billion. In addition, Mr. Gonder pioneered a number of important industry innovations ranging from investments in the management companies of several of the industry's leading private equity firms and the development of industry investment programs including a biotechnology investment initiative, a investment vehicle focused on venture capital funds and small buyout funds, a hedge fund program, and an innovative “crossover” fund focused on private equity investments related to real estate. In addition, Mr. Gonder was a member of the 4-person Senior Executive Team managing the entire CalPERS portfolio.
Prior to CalPERS, Mr. Gonder served in senior investment management positions for almost 12 years at the Travelers Companies and Connecticut Mutual where he was responsible for creating the private equity programs and completed a number of direct private equity and mezzanine debt investments into companies. During his career in the insurance industry, Mr. Gonder also managed a $1 billion portfolio of foreign investments and served as Vice President and Director of Research for Travelers' Common Stock Group.
Mr. Gonder holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Vassar College.
